Prediction of Limiting Casting Speed in a Horizontal Direct-Chill Casting through Numerical Modeling and Simulation

Limiting casting expression speed was obtained and the flow redistribution thermal history in a horizontal direct-chill (HDC) predicted using numerical modeling approach. The governing solidification equations were non-dimensionalized to understand relevant contribution of each term processes HDC system. effect an increase on characteristics sump length represented by Péclet number Pe. Details simulation reveal that at low Pe, natural convective creates minor counter-clockwise recirculating cells lower half domain. However, Pe above 82.75, disappear due strong forced from upstream. Additionally, increases length, strength, spread turbulence field within beyond mold region. limiting conditions are computed predicting over which alloy temperature is solidus temperature. This gives simple relation for as function geometrical data properties. current work useful engineers who always rely trial error choosing new whenever be produced. Hence, with information relations, it possible easy predict operating window melt break-out can occur during HDC.
